Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ the role

Pan--Tilt--Zoom (PTZ) cameras capture detailed imagery of selected contacts, but this reduces awareness of the wider environment. This innovative project will assess the feasibility of a reinforcement learning system that decides where the camera should point and when to zoom. It will balance searching for new contacts, tracking known contacts and maintaining situational awareness under uncertainty.

The capability will extend Synoptix's Synx-Lookout product beyond detection and tracking by adding autonomous attention allocation, contact prioritisation and camera control while continuing to run on edge compute. Development will use Synoptix's synthetic environment capability, followed by testing with PTZ cameras and edge hardware.

Whilst working on this unique project as an AKT Associate, applying your academic skills to an industrially focused project, you will broaden your knowledge and expertise, and be supported by both industrial and academic supervisors.

The project will be supervised by Professor Özgür Simsek (Professor of Artificial Intelligence, Director of Ä¢¹½´«Ã½'s Reinforcement Learning Laboratory, Director of Ä¢¹½´«Ã½’s Centre for Artificial Intelligence) and by George Leete (Senior AI Engineer at Synoptix Limited).

Synoptix Ltd

Synoptix is an award-winning engineering consultancy delivering advanced solutions across defence, aerospace, healthcare, energy and cyber security sectors. The company develops innovative AI-powered products including Synx-Lookout, an edge-computing maritime awareness platform that uses computer vision and autonomy technologies.

We welcome applications from candidates who have:

 • A BSc, MComp, MSc, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science or a closely related discipline
 • Practical experience with modern reinforcement learning algorithms using function approximation.
 • Ability to manage workload independently and effectively.
 • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
 • Technical report writing experience.
 • Intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm for research-driven innovation.
 • Resilience and problem-solving mindset.

The Associate will investigate how reinforcement learning can be used to control PTZ cameras operating in complex maritime environments

The post will offer the following benefits:

 • Valuable experience and highly transferable skills.
 • Mentoring from the company and academic team.
 • Access to University resources to complete the project.
 • Experience working directly with a technology-focused industrial partner.

<![CDATA[Research Associate in Spectroscopy and Molecular Modelling for Zeolite Catalysed Alcohol-to-jet-fuel Catalysis (SS13564R)]]> /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13564R /jobs/rss/click.aspx?ref=SS13564R Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ the role

This role is part of the UK Catalysis Hub where the practical work will take place at the Research Complex at Harwell (RCaH), working within the Hub laboratories.

The UK Catalysis Hub is a national consortium of 46 universities, 15 companies, the STFC Harwell science facilities, and 13 international partners established in 2013 to coordinate and advance UK catalysis research and connect it internationally. Now in its third phase of funding, its priority research areas include sustainability and net zero, digital chemistry, and advanced characterisation methods. One of its core missions is to support the training and career development of early career researchers via community events.

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled and motivated postdoctoral researcher to work at the interface of heterogeneous catalysis and in situ spectroscopy, to understand molecular behaviour in zeolite catalysts for sustainable aviation fuels.

This one-year project brings together complementary expertise in catalytic testing and in situ spectroscopy (Lezcano Gonzalez, UK Catalysis Hub/Manchester) with atomistic modelling and simulation of microporous catalysts carried out by the main supervisor (O’Malley, Ä¢¹½´«Ã½). The work will focus on the alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) process, a key route to sustainable aviation fuels, and aims to establish how adsorption, diffusion, and competitive site interactions within zeolite micropores govern catalytic performance, selectivity, and stability.

The project will involve catalytic testing in fixed-bed reactors and in situ FTIR/DRIFTS spectroscopy to probe adsorption, acid-site interactions, and reaction intermediates. The successful candidate will be based at Harwell, gaining experience across multiple techniques.

This role offers a unique opportunity to develop an integrated experimental skillset working closely with expertise in molecular simulation, with strong links to national facilities (ISIS and Diamond) and future large-scale research programmes. There will also be opportunities to engage with industrial partners working on sustainable aviation fuels and advanced catalyst materials.

Both the UKCH and Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ are strongly committed to ED&I and RRI, with comprehensive strategies to tackle long-standing issues facing under-represented groups and key ethical issues, focusing on empowering, inspiring, connecting and upskilling more diverse leaders.

Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ you

Ideal candidate will have experience in the use of vibrational spectroscopy to study the adsorption of molecules into porous materials, and ideally synthesis and characterisation of zeolite catalysts.

Apart from excellent technical skills, good organisational, communication and presentation skills are essential for this role, as is the ability to work well in an interdisciplinary environment. Interaction with partners of the UK Catalysis Hub and participation in their events will be expected.

Further information

This is a full time (36.5 hours per week) fixed term role.

Advance Your Engineering Career Through Innovation and Impact

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate to investigate the fluid dynamics and heat transfer in rotating compressor cavities of gas turbines engines. The project is funded by the EPSRC in collaboration with the University of Surrey, Rolls-Royce and Siemens Energy. We are seeking a driven and capable individual to lead a high-impact project developing the next generation of hydrogen-compatible turbomachinery technology.

This position will offer you a way to apply your experience to a project that could shape the future of green energy technology and net-zero aerospace. As the Research Associate, you’ll lead a technically ambitious project with real-world application and long-term value. You’ll have the chance to:

 • Take ownership of a major research project to advance the understanding of fluid-dynamics and heat transfer through innovative experimental methods
 • Work at the intersection of academia and industry with support from both
 • Develop your skills in leadership, innovation, and strategic technical development
 • Gain access to training and a personal development allowance
 • Broaden your professional network through interaction with industrial partners

This role offers the autonomy of an academic position, with the added benefits of structured support and mentoring.

The goal is to investigate experimentally the buoyancy-induced rotating flow in a compressor cavity at low TRL. The research is underpinned by brand new instrumentation and to be conducted over a range of non-dimensional, engine-representative conditions. The study includes a fundamental exploration of boundary-layer transition from laminar to turbulent flow at high Grashof number. The experiments will be complemented by computational simulation at the University of Surrey, with the aim to scale data to higher TRL. The successful completion and implementation of this research will improve engine design methods at Rolls-Royce and Siemens for next-generation hydrogen-compatible engines.

Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ you

The ideal candidate will have:

 • A PhD in a relevant engineering field or experience in industrial R&D
 • Experience with experimentation and data analysis tools such as Matlab
 • Proficiency in CAD
 • Confidence working independently and engaging with multiple stakeholders
