Radio Investigations for Space Environment Research (RISER) is a major science project funded by NERC which aims to study the origin of adverse space-weather conditions at Earth, in particular by exploiting observations from the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) - the world's largest low-frequency radio-telescope.

The LOFAR data may be highly valuable in evaluating or initialising heliospheric models. Furthermore, the approach adopted in RISER should enable continuous and accurate tracking of inner-heliospheric and ionospheric plasma structures, and, combined with magnetospheric modelling, the development of more precise and advanced forecasts of space weather conditions and their impacts at Earth. 

The overall purpose of this job position is to use LOFAR data to verify and improve Met Office space weather forecasts and to set developments produced in RISER on track for operational use at the Met Office. The Research Associate shall work in close collaboration with the Met Office.

Summary of the role:

  • to conduct individual and collaborative research within this project;
  • to contribute to the execution of the project;
  • to use LOFAR data and other data (such as in situ solar wind observations from the Lagrange 1 point, heliospheric imager data) as an independent and comprehensive means of evaluating heliospheric forecasts run at the Met Office. 
  • to demonstrate the impact of including LOFAR data on heliospheric forecasts.
  • to use the results from the above work (i.e. 1 and 2), where relevant, to help improve the Met Office heliospheric forecast system. 
  • to contribute to efforts to model the coupling from the heliosphere to the magnetosphere and the ionosphere and to rigorously evaluate the results. 
  • to collaborate with the Met Office to ensure that any technical and scientific evaluation and testing is sufficient to support decisions on future operational implementation at the Met Office.
  • to analyse data from various instruments (e.g., LOFAR, in-situ instruments) for the characterisation of the inner heliosphere;
  • to disseminate project results (by means of project reports, peer-reviewed publications, conference contributions);
  • to actively participate in project meetings as well as Departmental and Group meetings;
  • to interface and collaborate with the with Met Office Space Weather experts, as required by the project needs.

As a member of Research Staff at the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ you

  • A PhD in radio astronomy, space physics, space weather, space engineering, or any other area closely related to the project;
  • familiarity with the use of space weather numerical models and / or analysis of space weather observations, or equivalent, including of the programming languages (e.g. Python) and Linux-based IT systems needed to develop and run these or similar applications at the Met Office;
  • familiarity with verification / validation methods used to evaluate models and the performance of their forecasts;
  • familiarity with, or demonstrated ability to learn, radio-based space weather observation techniques;
  • ability to carry out research work and to disseminate results;
  • ability to work in a team;
  • passion and self-motivation.

The appointee will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment and to build their research profile in space weather science. They will be supported to travel to meetings and to share their research with the wider community as opportunities arise throughout the project.

This project is part of the Centre for People-Led Net-Zero research () at the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½, and in particular the Heritage Buildings work-package ().

This role is for someone with proven expertise in whole-building energy analysis, particularly thermal modelling. It will involve :

  • building a thermal model in EnergyPlus, Autodesk Insight or IES (Virtual Environment), or similar. 
  • calibrating the model against the building’s current state
  • performing sensitivity studies to understand the major drivers of energy use
  • devise creative solutions for energy sue reduction, and evaluate their potential using the model

As a member of Research Staff at the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to Research Assistant if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ you

  • The ideal candidate will have expert knowledge of building energy analysis, and experience of using software such as EnergyPlus, Autodesk Insight or IES to carry out parametric studies to understand a building's energy use.  Ideally they would have a demonstrated ability to automate their workflow using a parametric / scripting environment.
  • The ideal candidate will have very strong communication skills, able to write technical reports and academic papers in high quality English, as well as being able to present their work in person to both academic and industry audiences. 
  • They will be comfortable working as part of the wider project team, sometimes pitching in to help others achieve a project deadline, as well as able to work independently and creatively, take decisions, and attempting to resolve issues themselves before asking for help.
  • The ideal candidate will also need to work within professional and ethical codes of conduct, and be committed to excellence and integrity in research and to safe working practices.
  • You should have a PhD in Architecture & Civil Engineering or extensive industry experience using the modelling tools on real-world projects.

This is currently a fixed-term position for 48 months, to start on 1 October 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ the role

The postholder will support the EPSRC Prosperity Partnership on Injectable Medicines, which explores the problem of sequential decision making applicable to optimising the high-volume, high-variation manufacturing of injectable medicines. The emphasis is on approaches that could eventually be deployed into real scenarios to improve industrial processes. Relevant areas of research include reinforcement learning and probabilistic machine learning. Candidates will be expected to design and develop novel approaches in these areas that are robust and applicable to real industrial scenarios.

There is a strong expectation you will actively contribute to the strong profile of machine learning work at Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ and its interdisciplinary ethos through participation in the development and publication of research results in major international conferences and journals.

The postholder will have the opportunity to work with Centre for AI scholars and academics, contributing to developing new funding bids, as well as support existing funded projects, and to gain experience in one or more areas of AI. Our capabilities are also of significant interest to industry, and you will be able to help deepen existing partnerships and develop new ones.

The Centre for AI at the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ provides a new home for this exciting field of research, focusing primarily, but not exclusively, on machine learning, the field that is driving the major developments in AI today. The Centre aims to lead, enable, connect, prepare, nurture, and showcase the fundamental research in AI, innovative applications and commercial activities that represents the distinctive internationally leading identity for Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ AI. 

Centre for AI members conduct basic research in AI and the Centre fosters interdisciplinary collaborations, e.g. Chemistry (drug discovery, material synthesis, chemical reaction prediction), Life Sciences (analyses of biological systems), Maths (theory of machine learning), and Physics (simulating complex physical systems, analysing vast data from astrophysics, particle physics, oceans)

This is initially a 2-year fixed term role, with the potential to extend, depending on the success of funding applications.   • A PhD (or equivalent experience and professional qualification) in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Biomedical Engineering, Computational Neuroscience or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience developing AI or machine learning methods using frameworks such as PyTorch and/or TensorFlow.
  • Hands-on experience acquiring, processing and analysing EEG and/or functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) data.

Research
You will work with colleagues, students and researchers to develop and publish papers. You will apply for research funding to support your ideas. You will find ways of making your research available to society, for example, by working with industry, developing spin-outs, collaborating with charities, influencing policymakers, or delivering talks and demonstrations to inform and excite wider audiences.

Teaching
You will lead the design and deliver of teaching for lectures, tutorials, and labs across our undergraduate and postgraduate courses. You will be educating and inspiring some of the brightest students in the country, delivering an engaging experience and a supportive programme.

Helping with the running of the department
You will have a few internal roles to help the Department run smoothly. For instance, you might help with student placements, ethics processes, recruitment and admissions or lead a research team.

Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ you

Our ideal candidates will hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline, along with a first degree or equivalent experience. Membership of a professional body and a higher education teaching qualification (e.g. PGCert, FHEA) are desirable. 

  • You should demonstrate substantial research experience in your field, with an emerging track record for Lecturers and an established research profile with funding success for Senior Lecturers/Readers.

The CEREBRIS project is groundbreaking project tackling one of the most pressing health challenges: neurological disease. These conditions now account for the highest share of global disability. By age 75, one in three people will be affected by a neurological condition, and one in five women will experience a stroke each year. These conditions disproportionately affect low-and-middle income countries. There is a critical need for solutions that are scalable, affordable and personalised to patients.

CEREBRIS is a European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder Open 2025 project involving an innovative, data-driven approach to managing neurological diseases. It aims to develop a secure, federated and explainable ecosystem- starting with stroke care. Its AI models will be designed from multiple types of patient data- such as brain scans, motion patterns and brain signals- to help doctors understand and predict more objectively how an individual is progressing and will recover after a brain injury. Using privacy-preserving technologies, the system will allow hospitals and clinicians to work together without ever sharing raw data, ensuring trust and compliance with global regulations. 

Driven by a multidisciplinary European consortium with deep expertise in neurology, AI, neurotechnology, and clinical translation, CEREBRIS will transform the entire stroke pathway- from early diagnosis to recovery. By delivering precise diagnostics and targeted rehabilitation, CEREBRIS will significantly reduce long term disability, substantially reduce healthcare expenses, and set a new standard for brain health globally.

This is a research-intensive role, with the expectation of significant contributions to research excellence, translational medicine, and innovation. 

Working alongside Prof Michael Yang, Prof Damien Coyle and the CEREBRIS team associated with the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ Institute for the Augmented Human and Centre for Spatial Intelligence, the Research Associate will develop novel artificial intelligence methods for the analysis and integration of multimodal biomedical data, as described in the CEREBRIS work plan. The research will focus on developing advanced generative and foundation AI models that learn shared representations from neuroimaging, wearable physiological signals, movement analysis and clinical data to improve the understanding, assessment and prediction of post-stroke motor function and recovery.

Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ you

The postholder will design, implement and evaluate state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms for multimodal data fusion, representation learning and predictive modelling, including the development of scalable AI pipelines and synthetic data generation approaches. The role will also contribute to privacy-preserving and federated learning methodologies to enable secure analysis of distributed healthcare datasets and support the translation of AI technologies into clinically relevant tools for stroke prognosis and personalised rehabilitation.

The post-holder will be expected to publish the results of the research in high impact journal publications (e.g. T-PAMI, IJCV) and top-tier AI conferences (e.g. NeurIPS, ICLR, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV). Experience of AI research (e.g. diffusion models, agentic AI), developing and applying technologies including deep learning using platforms such as Keras, Pytorch and/or experience of optimising the performance of software for high-performance computing on GPU clusters is requirement for this role.

Essential:

  • A PhD (or equivalent experience and professional qualification) in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Machine Learning, Biomedical Engineering, Computational Neuroscience or a closely related discipline. 
  • Experience with multimodal AI, foundation models, generative AI or representation learning. 
  • Experience developing AI, machine learning or signal processing methods using frameworks such as PyTorch and/or TensorFlow. 
  • Evidence of research excellence, including publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals or top-tier conferences. 
  • Excellent programming, analytical, written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet project deadlines. 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary and international research team. 
  • A commitment to conducting research to the highest professional and ethical standards. 

Desirable:

  • Hands-on experience acquiring, processing or analysing EEG and/or fNIRS data, with the ability and enthusiasm to work across both modalities.

Join the CEREBRIS project, a flagship European Innovation Council (EIC) Pathfinder programme developing a secure, federated and explainable AI ecosystem to transform stroke diagnosis, prognosis and rehabilitation. Working within the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ Institute for the Augmented Human and reporting to Prof Damien Coyle and Dr Jibraan Esoof, you will plan and run an observational clinical trial with stroke patients at St Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin, as part of a wider multi-site study across EU partner sites.

In this role you will:

  • Organise and manage a multi-visit observational clinical trial with stroke patients, collecting and analysing multimodal data to build evidence for next-generation AI-based neurotechnology diagnostics.
  • Coordinate directly with clinical partners, patients, families and carers to schedule and deliver trial sessions in hospital settings, while adhering to approved study protocols and Standard Operations Procedures (SOP) governed under the study.
  • Publish research in high-impact journals and present findings to stakeholders nationally and internationally, while contributing to grant proposals that sustain and expand the research programme.
  • Conduct site visits to stroke units to understand clinical and patient needs, establish partnerships, and shape product requirements for the future commercialisation of AI-based neurotechnology.

The role will involve being based in Dublin for the duration of the contract to run and manage the trial on-site in St Vincent's University Hospital, with further international travel as required.

We are looking for a motivated, driven and collaborative researcher with a genuine interest in improving outcomes for people affected by stroke and neurological disease, and who enjoys working directly with patients, clinicians and multidisciplinary teams. You should be comfortable managing the practicalities and logistics of a clinical trial, from scheduling sessions with hospital teams to following approved procedures, collecting and collating relevant data into a dedicated system for the study, and confident working independently for extended periods away from campus. Furthermore, an attention to detail on data quality, patient rapport and safety and experience with neurotechnology applications is a must. 

Essential:

  • A PhD degree in subject area of direct relevance for the project, or equivalent significant relevant experience and professional qualification
  • Software skills as evidenced by the ability to use and manipulate software tools for displaying stimuli in timed experiments.
  • Experience in developing research collaborations with clinical partners.
  • Experience in conducting research with humans participants, analysing findings, summarising findings and presenting findings in written reports.
  • Experience in designing and planning research experiments.
  • Experience in data acquisition and recording electrophysiological signals from multiple subjects and handling large datasets.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Organometallic Chemistry to work under the supervision of Dr Marina Uzelac for a period of up to 36 months working on an EPSRC-funded project.

The research in Uzelac group focuses on expanding the applications of earth-abundant metals, with a particular emphasis on manganese complexes. Our aim is to develop new catalytic methodologies by harnessing unique cooperative effects within these systems, while also gaining rigorous mechanistic understanding of the underlying chemistry.

This specific project focuses on the synthesis and characterisation of new bimetallic manganate species and their application in organic synthesis as catalysts and reagents for the preparation of organoboranes.

This project will require expertise in organometallic and inorganic chemistry, main group and organic synthesis, catalysis and a range of key characterisation techniques.

As a member of Research Staff at the Ä¢¹½´«Ã½, you will be encouraged to take up a minimum of 10 days professional development pro rata per year.

  • PhD in Chemistry with experience in organometallic chemistry

As the KTP Associate, you will act as the project lead, responsible for delivering the full lifecycle of the project.

You will:

  • Design, develop and validate machine learning models and decision systems
  • Work with complex, multi-source retail datasets
  • Translate technical outputs into actionable commercial insights
  • Collaborate with engineers to embed models into a scalable platform
  • Lead project planning, delivery and stakeholder engagement
  • Transfer knowledge into the business through training and documentation

This is a fixed-term hybrid role for a period of 29 months at the Tapestry Agency with monthly travel to Swindon.
